Restaurant Payments Beyond the Terminal
Most restaurant owners don’t lose sleep over the card reader. They lose sleep over everything around it.
Tips that don’t add up at close. A Friday line out the door. A four-top done with dessert twenty minutes ago, still waiting on the check. And delivery-app orders taking a big bite of every ticket.
The terminal is just where the money lands. The real work is how money moves through the whole night. Let’s take the four problems one at a time.
Problem 1: Tips get messy
Tips go wrong when they live in too many places: a scribble on a paper slip, a guess in a spreadsheet, a “we’ll sort it out tomorrow.”
Keep it simple:
- Let the guest pick — show tip choices on the screen so nobody has to do math or read handwriting.
- Keep it on the sale — the tip is saved with the payment, not on a napkin.
- Split it the same way every night — pick one rule for sharing tips and write it down so the team knows what to expect.
Square lets you turn on tip prompts and choose your own tip amounts. On some plans you can also set up tip pooling, where tips are shared across your team — equally, or by percentages you pick.
Problem 2: Lines at the counter
A long line isn’t always a staffing problem. Often it’s one screen doing every job: taking orders, taking payments, and answering “is the fryer down?”
Quick fixes to try:
- Add a second place to pay — a handheld device lets someone take orders or payments while standing in the line.
- Keep the menu current — mark sold-out items so nobody orders something you can’t make.
- Send orders straight to the kitchen — a kitchen display screen means fewer paper tickets and fewer “what was that order again?” moments.
Problem 3: Tables waiting on the check
In full-service spots, the slowest part of the night is often the end: find the server, carry the card away, run it, bring it back, wait for the tip line.
A tableside night looks like this:
- Order at the table — the server punches it in on a handheld, right there.
- Send it to the kitchen — the order goes to the kitchen screen or printer.
- Pay at the table — the guest taps or dips, picks a tip, and splits the check if they need to.
- Table is free — no card leaves the guest’s sight, and the next party sits sooner.
Square for Restaurants supports taking orders and payments at the table, and splitting checks by item, by seat, or evenly.
You don’t need all four steps on day one. Even just paying at the table can help.
Problem 4: Online orders eating your margin
Delivery apps bring you new guests. They also charge a fee on the orders they send. If your regulars order through those apps too, you’re paying a fee on people who already know you.
A calmer plan:
- Keep the apps for new guests — they still help people find you.
- Give regulars a direct way to order — your own online ordering page for pickup or delivery.
- Tell people about it — put it on receipts, menus, your door, and social pages.
- Keep it all in one place — have online orders show up on the same system your staff already uses.
Square offers an online ordering page that works with your Square POS. Square says it doesn’t charge marketplace commissions on those orders. You still pay normal card processing, plus delivery fees if you use them.
Square also connects with delivery apps like DoorDash and Uber Eats, so those orders land in one place too.
Where LocalPay fits
Square gives you the tools. Setting them up for your floor plan, your tip rules, and your menu is still work. And problems don’t wait for a slow Tuesday. They show up at 7:30 on a Saturday.
That’s why LocalPay exists. We’re a Square reseller in Wilmington, NC. Same Square tools, plus a local rep who sets them up with you, trains your team, and picks up when something goes sideways.

A 10-minute restaurant payments check
Answer these honestly:
- Do tips add up at close without a spreadsheet?
- Does everyone on staff know how tips get shared?
- How long does a table wait between “check, please” and “paid”?
- Is there only one place to pay when the line gets long?
- How many online orders came through delivery apps last month — and how many were regulars?
If two or more of those made you wince, that’s where to start.
